I did enjoy how simple and matter of fact your video was but I do agree with a previous comment that the reflectors used cover a multitude of sins and you would have seen much clearer differences if you were shooting with only the softbox or umbrella.
I definitely will have to redo this video some day. I cringe when I watch it now. No question you are right, for doing the comparison no reflector would have been a MUCH better idea.
Awful sound quality, after 20seconds dorry I had to say bye bye.
Thanks for very well done presentation. I downloaded Evoto, purchased 1200 credits and used the software on a headshot session I just did for a client but as much as this seems like a wonderful app, it also reduces the quality of my original photo/headshots. I'm very disappointed because the Evoto software doesn't appear to offer a high res professional look. For example I adjusted a person's skin, removed bags/wrinkles, freckles and stray hair but major parts of the photo, like the ears, person's clothes and my gray backdrop have become very grainy/fuzzy. If I could post a sample of my experience here, I would. I'm really upset with this result.
Great video. I wish I could afford the flex kit. I just got the stripboxes to try and up my game. Hopefully, once I've mastered the stripboxes, I can up my game. Thanks for the video.
Literal wizardry haha, love this! Thanks for the practical step by step, this was the first video I found after downloading Evoto.
can you create presets as well?
I like the flex color. Strobes had a bit of blue. Great job. Peter chops the top of the head off. I like your composition better than Peter's. The way you interact with your clients is so Peter. Great job. Thanks.
lol, nothing about the quality of specular highlights or the roll off from light to dark. The problem with reviews like this is that original parabolic umbrellas had a stick type strobe in them (briese). The original Elinchrom octa bank was indirect, Tube facing the back of the octa not the front. If that’s what you are looking for you won’t get it from direct softboxes. If you just want generic kit it does not really matter what brand you buy.
You did a wonderful job explaining and walking through the process. Thank you.
Can you connect with an iPad? Also if you tether to a laptop will it record on the SD card?
Vail, crushing it!
Wow
Hi I got my camera on Saturday its a NIKON D700 Thanks for the video it was really detailed and enlightening Plus you are beautiful and I love your ear rings
Errr why not just use constant LED with the stripboxes. That is how I was doing it and way cheaper and just as a effective as the overpriced Westcott. Nice ad though...
You could definitely do that. But then the soft boxes are much deeper than the panels. I would question if you would get the exact even pattern of light the flex outputs because you still would have it coming from a single point going forward, or bouncing into a disc inside. I would be curious if you took a light meter to it and measured the output across it at different points what the values would be and how many stops different from one system to another.
I would like to know how did you get the grey background when there was no background used and everyone was photographed a long way off the wall...
We use the inverse square law. The wall is actually painted white. We are illuminating our subject and not illuminating the wall. The further away the subject is from the wall the darker the wall will be as a background.
Awesome tips, thanks!
Thanks, I've been thinking about going back to strobes (which I already own) so this was helpful
Thanks Vail, lots of helpful tips
Would it be possible to color match 2 cameras from different company’s with this method? For example I would like to have Fuji colors on my Sony a7iv.
I think all your reflectors and your ttl is making them look similar to each other.
I think one problem with the comparison tho.. is that you have so much reflective surfaces around the model, that it doesn't matter how big or small the light source is, it will always bounce around and fill the room and become really soft light on the model.. so all the modifiers, in this setup, will look actually a lot softer than they usually are without all those reflectors.. at this point you could get the same softness by just pointing the flash to the white ceiling bare bulb and letting it bounce all around the room.. which is something i use a lot of the times in events with low white ceilings lol
Great job!!!❤
Excellent video. Thanks
Audio is only on the left
Where can I get those backdgrounds you added?
Hi @jeromelynchphotography some are included in the evoto software. Others (the blue and green) are ones I shot myself and just imported.
Mind sharing them with me?@@VailFucci-Photographer
Which stand is that?
Thank you very much💓💓💓
Vail dear, how do I get rid of facial hair. I really need it gone in one of my headshots. And I want it look good. Can this erase facial hair in this program? 💕
As far as I know, not yet. Are you talking a beard or a 5 o clock shadow? If 5 o clock shadow I think there is a chance the dodge and burn sliders might be able to tackle it. If you send me the image I can try it. Have you downloaded the program yet? You can see how well it works without even using one of your credits. The credit just comes off once you export the image. But it does a great job of showing you what it will look like right in the program before you export it.
Vail , is this a paid service like subscription or how does this work can I just download it and use it or is there fees or membership etc xx
So when you use that link the first 30 edits are free. After that you buy the edits in bulk. Right now the lowest is $83.88 USD for a pack that includes 1200 credits. You can buy bigger packs for even higher discount if you want. But I'd suggest starting with the free 30 edits and see how great it is. Then decide if you want to buy a pack. But it doesn't require you to pay monthly thankfully!
Great Video Vail :-)
Hi Vail! Do you have a direct comparison of the silver deep umbrella versus an octabox? I’m considering either the 65” silver beaded umbrella or the octa quick XXL which has the deflector plate. I would love to see a direct comparison of these two!
Hi Erica, that’s the largest one I have. Generally a silver beaded umbrella without a sock is going to be much more specular than an octa box. With the sock on they will be very similar. You will have slightly more control on where the light goes with the octa than the umbrella.
@@VailFucci-Photographer I figured I could use the umbrella with or without a diffuser and the octabox with or without as well. If you could only get one to start out, which would you choose?
@@MaskedCountryGirl what is your expected subject matter? Remind me the total size of the xxl octa?
@@VailFucci-Photographer it’s a 60 inch. Headshots, families, pets, seniors. On location and outdoor shoots :) (not studio)

Excellent, @Vail Fucci! You are top notch!
Thanks Vail, super helpful!
Thanks so much for this great video. What temperature did you set the Flex Cine lights at? They look warmer than the flash portrait comparison.
I believe they were on 5600.
I believe 5600. The strobes are supposed to be 5600 as well. But the two are definitely not equivalent.
That's interesting as the light from the Flex seems more enhancing somehow. I saw in one of Peter's videos that he set the Flex to 5600 to match his window light for a shot and wonder if, and when he would ever change the temperature.
@@gengphoto sometimes he warms the kick.
I agree you got more dramatic lighting out of the Flex, but one thing I noticed is that if you get rid of that green/cyan cast in the images from the AD-300s, you improve the image a lot.
Thank you very much for this valuable and interesting comparison. With regard to the comparison shots between the strobes and the Flex lighting, it seems that the strobes were a bit hot and the colors somewhat washed out. Either that or the continuous light was a bit too low, although the colors are substantially more vivid. However, I'm reasonably confident that each can be adjusted to achieve the almost exact same exposure result without having to resort to extensive retouching in post. Although there's certainly a benefit to the WYSIWYG of continuous light, the cost is significant in terms of initial expense, transportation issues, and a substantially more cumbersome setup and breakdown. In the end, I imagine if I were a high-producing headshot photographer and primarily worked in my own studio, I'd probably go for a continuous light system. But, until I reach that level, I'm going to be sticking with my strobes.
Awesome video and technique.❤
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It is so helpful.
You are the best! Thank you!
Thank you, Vail, very helpful.
Thank you, Vail; very helpful.
You are the best when it comes to creating educational videos. Thank you!
Vail, this is one of the best illustrations on the benefits of the Flex Kit. Of course, it helps when you are as talented as you are!
Thank you for your kind comment @DajuanJones!
more like a sad Westcott ad... LOL
Vail this is a great video. Seeing the difference the flex kit makes is really helpful. As someone using strobes it’s also useful to see what your process was before switching. Great to see you and Kevin working.
Have you tried shooting with one light and Westcott eyelighter? Shots come out per awesome.
Hi Steve, yes I have. I shot that way before I joined the headshot crew. It works in a pinch, particularly for volume headshots that have to be done in a hurry. But my clients are typically looking for a more high-end look and the Hurley Triangle configuration or his key fill kick configuration accomplishes that better than any other lighting setup I have encountered.
Thanks Steve and Vail, is there a video showing what the Flex Cine and the Westcott Eyeliner looks like?
@@gengphoto I haven’t tried that before. I had a knock of eye lighter from angler but once I got the flex kit I didn’t use it any more so I gave it to one of my students.
so you have been drinking the Hurley Koolaid..got it LOL @@VailFucci-Photographer
@@shaolin95 the Hurley koolaid took me from about $60k a year in revenues to $170k. I am happy to drink it up. :)
Well done on the video, Val. Your comparison was incredibly valuable and exactly what I've been searching for. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks so much for putting this information together, so very helpful.
I wish more You Tube videos used this approach of minimal editing and more stream of consciousness type of education. Although it takes more time to watch a video like this, I think the viewer actually learns more from this format.
Vail, thanks for taking time to run this test and share your results. It seems that what you found most beneficial was the ability to see the light patterns more easily when using constant lights but adjusting the flex lights seems to be pretty cumbersome with lots of hardware to have to loosen/tighten as you try to move the lights into position. Would be interesting to see the comparison with using your Glow softboxes and a constant light like the Amaran or Nanlite LED's. You get the advantage of constant light with the benefits of lighter weight, easier adjustments, and lower cost. (and while you do still end up with cords you don't have to deal with the ballast boxes so there is less clutter to work around)
Hi Mike, after the shoot I too found using the knuckles for adjustment to not be my cup of tea. So I got these great pieces from Kupo. It makes adjusting my angles of the lights sooooo simple. bhpho.to/3XIQAdW Another thing I can do with the panels that I can’t do with constant lights in softboxes is that I can nestle one in behind the other. The depth of the softbox makes that really difficult to do. With the flex kit I can do a much tighter triangle. And the last thing I have figured is you have top to bottom even illumination with the flex kit. With a double diffused softbox you can come close but it just plain is different than having the light eliminate from a single point and be diffused or hundreds of lights distributed evenly over the panels. I don’t know if that’s what makes the difference or not. But when I use the flex the light just looks like it is painted on them. The light is different somehow.
@@VailFucci-Photographer thanks for the additional explanation on why you prefer the flex kit lighting. 🙂
